Delaware Canoeing and Camping
- June 25, 2005

W
e began our tour of the
Delaware River launching
the flotilla of kayaks and canoes near
the bridge at Dingman's Ferry. Paddling
throughout was kept at a leisurely pace,
allowing us to relax in the sun or fish for small mouth bass. The route from Dingman's to Smithfield Beach brings us past the "Rock," a favorite stopping point for many on day two. The weather remained cooperative staying clear for both days of the trip.

After making camp and serving dinner, the evening convened as usual around the campfire with a Wales Tales court forming off to the side. The rounds of Wales Tales were stepped up a notch with Pat and Adam joining the group. Earlier in the day William and Hay-o stumbled upon a stash of firewood along the water while taking a "break," helping to contribute to a very large campfire late in the night.

The following morning, George became the topic of discussion as all listened to stories about his sandals and Jim Beam from the night before. Ingrid shows off her skills as a short order cook making breakfast burritos, earning her the job from this point forward. While breaking down camp, Joseph passes the time chasing and capturing frogs.

A total of 36 people joined in for overnight camping. This included men, women, and children from the "core" group along with many first-timers. Many of the Chi Phi's wore their orange Squam jerseys, which has now become the official canoe trip uniform. New to the trip were the De Joy family, Pat Monahan and his son, Collin, neighborhood friends of the Fiske family Dave with his sons Tyler and Conner, and Adam Dauer. Joining us for the day kayaking was Susan Wieters from Medco.

A few "firsts" were made on this trip. Jay and Steffany brought along Radar, their blind husky and Jeff's kayak was taken on its maiden voyage.

The MVP this year goes to Mrs. Victor De Joy. Getting more than she bargained for, she single-handedly paddled 20 miles with two kids and camping gear. Just prior to the stop at the "Rock" she remained in good spirits after an unexpected change in the current forced her canoe into a strainer.

I enjoyed spending time with all who attended and hope that everyone enjoyed the trip as much as I did. Adam Dauer enjoyed the trip so much that it seems he may have even had a life changing experience. Every year the interest in this trip continues to grow. I look forward to increasing the size of the core.

What Do Visitors Have To Say?

Ask me why I do this every year and I'll say "I'm crazy." All the loading and unloading of gear is a pain in the ass. However, seeing the pictures makes me appreciate all that hard work. I especially enjoyed hanging out with people I haven't seen in 10 years (Vic). A goal of ours should be (since we've done just about everything else), to get newbies to join us. Good work Jiggs! The vomit shoes are a nice touch too.

Two more things...1) All those mommies with little ones at home and more on the way, "Get sitters" next year we miss you (Tammy & Kristin), and B) where can I rent a motor boat net year???

The canoe trip was a triumph as usual. Joey Jiggs was a little angel in my canoe (really). He is welcome back next year.
Quote of the weekend: "You picked a great place to throw up George; right on your sandals."

Runner up: "Frank, did you mail that letter?"

- Streekfugs

Another great trip - with lots of new blood. I agree with Frank, the goal for the future should be cajoling more of our friends and family to accompany us on our annual trek. Like Jiggs always says, "the more the merrier!" Of course, not every newcomer should have as much fun as Vic's wife. She sure got her money's worth on the river this year!

For my boys et al, one of the highlights was THE ROCK. The kids thought jumping into the river was the best part of the trip. They have asked that we schedule next year's trip for the same ride, Dingman's to Smithfield Beach.

And George, try sleeping with your legs elevated. Maybe then they wont go numb.

Wales Tales call of "Koz" - "Won't" - "Play" - with "wussy" as the stutter word worked pretty well. MIkey even started playing Zoom Schwartz Figliano on Sunday's ride to Smithfield!

- Rooster

You're Irish you dumb Mick!
- Streekfugs

Frankie and Eric, thanks for taking on Joey Jigglet as a stowaway. I wanted him to be there with me but the kayak wouldn't allow it. Having you guys in a canoe made it all possible.

A snippet of the evening inside the tent of George and Drew Arnold beginning at approximately 2am:
George Arnold: "Oh yeah! Oh yeah, that's it! Son of a b$#3$! Ah, f$#@! F#@#, f#@#, f#@#! I can't feel the whole side of my body!"
Drew Arnold (the only one in the tent with George): "George are you OK? George?"
10 minutes later....
George Arnold: "F$@#, f$@#! Mother f$@#$#! My f%$#$@# arm! Ah sh$t!"
Drew Arnold: "George! Man, you've got problems! You must have a sleeping disorder or something!"
George Arnold: "F$@#, f$@#! Mother f$@#$#! Sh!t! Son of a b!tch! F$@#, f$@#!" (tirade continues as this for about 30 minutes at a stretch with 15 to 30 minute breaks in between)
In the middle of each tirade Drew Arnold would scream: "God damm!t George!! I haven't gotten any sleep! Man you really have problems! You need to see somebody about this! You've been screaming all night and have gotten more sleep than me!"

Then, sometime around 7am, George screams out in his sleep: "Frank! You stink!"

While praying my son would not wake up to this barrage of profanity, it was almost like listening to a comedy skit.
