Thomas Metelski's Proposal To Stacie Sirak, July 31, 1999

S
tacie, Thomas and eleven of their friends had planned a night out at the Gotham Comedy Club for a show in New York City. The Gotham Comedy Club was the location where Stacie and Thomas had their first date about nine months earlier.

For this evening, Thomas had privately arranged for the group to be seated at the table towards the front near the stage. During the show, their host emcee, Tom, was doing his stand-up routine telling stories and jokes to the audience. Throughout the evening he had picked on Stacie and Thomas' group, referring to them as the "couples" table. He asked Thomas and Stacie different questions about their relationship such as, "How long have you been dating?" and "Where did you meet?" Stacie had no idea that she was falling right into a trap.

The week before, Stacie had become infuriated with Thomas for changing his plans to help Tammy and Jeff the morning of "Lobsterfest." He told her, without notice, that his brother required his assistance to move heavy furniture in his apartment. Stacie felt that Thomas was being inconsiderate for changing plans. Instead, he borrowed his brother's car in order to meet Stacie's father. He was on his way to ask Mr. Sirak for permission to marry his daughter.

Towards the end of the show Tom the emcee came out for the closing. He began to banter with Thomas and challenged him to get up on the stage. Stacie became very embarrassed and wished she had not let him past her. At this point she still had no idea what was about to happen. She thought that he was going to get up there and really try to be funny. Everyone else in the group began to discreetly take out their cameras.

Stacie began to listen to what he was saying as he explained to the audience that they have had many good times and a lot of laughs at this club. He poured out his heart and expressed that he wanted to ask Stacie if she would laugh with him for the rest of their lives. He pulled out an engagement ring and walked over to her. The entire audience cheered as cameras flashed repeatedly. She did not realize what was happening until Thomas had actually said the word "ask." From this point on she only saw and heard him.

Stacie had always felt that she would want a very intimate proposal from Thomas with just the two of them. Now, she wouldn't have had it any other way. "It was great because it is truly his style. And having friends and his family there made it wonderful!"
